Beskrivelse:   af  John W. M. Jagt
The importance of the present find is twofold. First of all, it represents a rare occurrence of a more or less complete brittle star (disc and arms attached), of which there are only a few finds from Upper Cretaceous and lower Paleocene deposits worldwide. Secondly, the state of preservation in a flint nodule illustrates a kind of double picture in that most voids in the original ophuroid skeleton are filled while the calcareous ossicles have disappeared throughout dissolution, thus resulting in a 'negative' picture. The details or disc scalation and mouth frame (jaws, teeth and oral and dental papillae) are of great importance in comparing this fossil species to Recent ones of similar habitus. It can lead to a better understanding of such sturdy-plated forms in the lower Paleocene and a more reliable characterisation of the extinct Ophiomusium granulosum/danicum group.
